Saving Mount Everest – Solid Waste Management Project (2011- 2013)
The slogan for this project was Restoring Dignity to the Mountain: Liberating Mount Everest from Rubbish. The Saving Mount Everest (SME) Waste Management Project, implemented from 2011 to 2013, was designed to manage the solid waste in three VDCs (Chaurikharka, Namche and Khumjung) of Solukhumbu District. It was implemented to help conserve the natural environment and eco-systems, and to remove garbage from Mount Everest and its surrounding.
It was implemented in cooperation with the Everest Summiteers Association of Nepal (ESA) along with members of the national and international community, who commendably joined hands with the Government of Nepal to cleanup Mount Everest and develop a sustainable waste management system in the Everest region.
